There was a time when veganism was seemingly a mere ethical choice.
People opted to follow a vegan diet based on their principles, with the consensus that they chose an inadequate diet that could harm them. Another misconception was that the tastiest meals were those that included meat and fish and that by becoming vegan, you were missing out on quality taste, as well as vital nutrients.
Of course, we know that not to be true, and these days many people have gone all-in on a vegan diet, knowing that there are health benefits. High-profile vegans have helped; from Alicia Silverstone to Serena Williams, stars of screen and sports have followed their vegan principles and seen no ill effects. The more celebrities go vegan, the more everyday people will follow suit.
It isn’t always easy coming up with inspiration for meals, but if you are vegan and want to know what some of those celebrities eat, then we’ve got you covered. Here are three-of-a-kind vegans, all with their own favorite dishes.
Ariana Grande
28-year-old Grande has had five US number one albums and four successive number ones across the Atlantic in England. She’s also a committed vegan, despite suffering from hypoglycemia, which she attributed to poor dietary habits in her younger years. She now enjoys vegan food and lists Japanese food amongst her favorites. “She loves daikon, lotus, adzuki beans—almost like a macrobiotic Japanese [diet],” says Harley Pasternak, a nutritionist who has worked with the star. If you wish to follow suit, you might not find those on the shelves at your local Walmart.
Daniel Negreanu
Negreanu is one of the world’s most famous poker players, a man still on the circuit who has accumulated more than $40m in tournament cashes. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest poker players of all time and has crossed over into mainstream pop culture by virtue of his vegan diet and subsequent advocacy of a vegan lifestyle. Negreanu likes to get off to a good start, ensuring he deals his body the right hand to play for the day. He swaps up his breakfasts each day, switching between oatmeal with berries and tofu scramble with coffee. “My diet’s now as good as it’s ever been, and although my veganism started out absolutely about health, it’s also become about the environment and animal cruelty,” he said, adding, “the way animals are treated, and the conditions are atrocious.”
Travis Barker
Barker rose to fame as the drummer for pop-punk band Blink 182 and played with punk legend Tim Armstrong in their project band, The Transplants. His fame might have remained high amongst skate punks, but he entered mainstream pop culture recently by getting engaged to Kourtney Kardashian. Barker claims he feels better on his diet, saying, “Honestly, ever since I found this way of eating, I have endless amounts of energy. I can go all day, and after it all, I never find myself getting tired. No matter what kind of shows I have done or workouts I do on top of it, I still have to force myself to sleep at night.” If you want to bang the drums deep into the night, then you can copy Barker by opting for high protein, gluten-free dishes like tofu spinach scramble, kale salad with chickpeas, and quinoa bowls with tempeh.
